Canesten Cream

Canesten Cream is an anti-fungal cream used for the treatment of various fungal skin infections such as ringworm, athlete’s foot (fungal foot infection), fungal nappy rash, and fungal sweat rash. It is also used for relieving irritation due to fungal infection of the genitals (end of penis or vulva). It contains clotrimazole as an active ingredient to treat fungal skin infections.

Clotrimazole exerts its antifungal activity by inhibiting the biosynthesis of ergosterol, an essential constituent of the fungal cell membrane that helps to keep the fungal cell intact and directly promotes its growth. Inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis damages the fungal cell integrity and leads to the inhibition of fungal growth.

How does Canesten treat thrush?

Canesten External Cream is an antifungal treatment that works by killing the yeast that causes the fungal infection. Canesten Cream contains the powerful active antifungal ingredient clotrimazole, a substance that actively fights the cause of fungal skin infections. Canesten Cream helps to soothe associated itching and soreness and can be applied directly to the vulva or labia (external thrush) for effective relief.

How to use Canesten

Always use Canesten Antifungal Cream exactly as described in the patient information leaflet or as your doctor or pharmacist has advised. If you are not sure how to use it, check with your doctor or a pharmacist. It is advisable to follow these directions closely:

  • Pierce the seal of the tube before use by inverting the cap and pressing it against the seal.
  • Apply a thin and even layer of Canesten External creams to the affected area and gently rub it 2 or 3 times a day.
  • A 1/2cm long strip of cream is enough to cover an area of about the size of the hand.
  • Depending on the type of infection, the recommended duration of the treatment might vary.
  • The treatment is generally required for a minimum of two weeks but up to four weeks may be necessary, depending on the type of infection.
